First of all, David Price deciding to opt out is a completely rational and responsible and respectable decision on his part. He has been a class act his whole career and wish him nothing but the best and good health while he is away from the sport to be with his family.
David Price was looking to fill a issing slot in the Dodgers rotation. The Dodgers were hoping to get a veteran arm in with some fresh young arms. That will not be the case anymore as David Price has decided to opt out of the season.
This leaves the question, who should fill his slot?
As of July 18th, the rotation looks like it is shaping up to be Kershaw, Buehler, Wood, Urias, and one last spot that belonged to Price. What should the Dodgers do with this spot? Given the depth that they have, that decision is simple, utilize the depth of the roster.
The Dodgers have had an excellent farm system over the last years and have benefitted from good young pitchers like Buehler. Since this will be a shortened season and no fans will be present at the games, this will be a great opportunity to let some of the younger guys get some pitches in against some Major League hitters.
The Dodgers should easily coast into the playoffs and that should give them even more of a reason to experiment with that last spot in the rotation. Alternating that spot with Gonsolin and Dustin May would be the ideal route. But also mixing in Stripling to him some long outings as well.
The possibilities seem endless for the Dodgers given the depth in their pitching options and David Price opting out allows for some creativity that could benefit some of the Dodgers’ younger pitchers. As we all know, David Roberts, Dodgers’ Manager, likes to be a bit creative so this could very well be what the season might look like for the Dodgers.
