The Angels beat the A’s on Saturday with the help of Cobb’s stellar start. They are now 2-1 in the series and will hope to tie the series on Sunday when they send Quintana to the mound.
Angels complete the shutout against the A’s
The Angels’ 4-0 victory on Saturday marked the first time all season that the Angels were able to complete a shutout. Cobb went 7 innings and only allowed 3 hits and 2 walks which is possibly one of the best starts from an Angel pitcher this year. Watson and Iglesias came in and provided 2 perfect innings to seal the win in Oakland.
The game was stagnating at 0-0 until the 5th inning when the Angels were able to score all of their 4 runs. It all started with an error from the A’s catcher when he misplayed a throw from the first baseman. All four runs given up from the A’s were unearned because of this error. One of the few times all season that the Angels caught a break.
Ohtani provided 2 RBIs while Rendon followed that up by scoring Ohtani on the very next at-bat. Fletcher was the only that drove in the first run but was not credited with an RBI because of the error. He seemed to be attempting a safety squeeze but Olsen, A’s first baseman, played it brilliantly.
Angels on the brink of entering first place consideration
The Angels now move to 7 games back from first place in the AL West and 6 games back from a playoff spot. Their record on the year now moves to 23-29 which puts them 6 games under .500. Despite the weird start to the series, a win against the A’s on Sunday will move the Angels only 5 games back and would make it a rather successful trip to Oakland.
